The Record-Setting Uptime of My Card House

side view of the indomitable card house On 15 February 2004, after a weekend in Virginia with my family, I returned to College Park and built a card house using two decks of cards that I had brought back with me. I had brought back two more decks, but rather than continue building and encroach even more on my living space, I left the card house as it was, where it has since remained, accumulating an uptime that would make many computers jealous.

This card house survived intact through a substantial furniture rearrangement (in which nearly every furniture item was relocated to a different place in my apartment), frequent folding of large bed linens, and light breezes blowing through the open windows during the unseasonal heat wave in late February/early March.

Friday 22 October 2004 marked the 250th day of uptime for this card house. I decided to take it down in order to make room for my parents and my sister, who will be spending two nights in my apartment over the Thanksgiving holiday. The 250th day of uptime thus provided a convenient milestone on which to carry out the demolition.
