Here is what my computer looked like before the CRT monitor decided to
stop working. Notice that the monitor is less than the recommended
minimum distance (24 inches) from the uninterruptible power supply.
Later I would move the printer to a coffee table on the other side of
the desk, allowing the uninterruptible power supply to be seated in an
upright position.

| After packing away the CRT monitor in my closet, I
enjoyed a fruitful week learning how to operate my
computer without immediate visual feedback. I entered commands on
the keyboard to start and stop music, perform rudimentary file editing,
and send documents to the printer on the nearby coffee table. When
immediate visual feedback was needed, I walked to the math department
and ran the necessary programs through an SSH session. |

One week after my CRT monitor died, I returned to
Virginia to visit my folks and sort through some of my old boxes to
select things that I would like to bring back to my apartment. Over
that weekend I picked up a new
monitor for my computer, which is shown in this picture. If this
monitor lasts as long as the last one, I will not be forced to
experience another week of headless computing until February 2007. |
